Come from Away
August was a whirlwind of driving, site seeing, and exploring. We took the ferry from North Sydney, Nova Scotia to Port aux Basques, Newfoundland on Tuesday, August 11th. We saw lots of lighthouses, lobster traps, colored houses, quaint towns, and puffins! We were able to visit Twillingate, Fogo Island, St. John's, Quidi Vidi, and the town of Dildo in Newfoundland. A fun fact is that Jimmy Kimmel is the honorary mayor of Dildo.
The people of Newfoundland have a lot of sayings. "Come from away" is a term used for people who aren't locals or from the island. Come From Away is also a musical that depicts the assistance that the people of Gander, Newfoundland, provided to stranded passengers after the 9/11 attacks. There were about 6,000 people from planes that had to make emergency landings in Gander. The locals welcomed them and provided food and shelter. This year was the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, and we drove through Gander. Unfortunately we didn't have time to see the play or much of the area.
